Title Workshop on Heritage Conservation
Description Workshop on Heritage Conservation, Mumbai. This event achieved its stated aim to raise awareness of neglected heritage buildings in Mumbai. The opening address by the Chief Minister of the State of Maharashtra gave official endorsement and brought media attention. The event attracted 500 delegates. Alan Johnson of English Heritage was sourced by CAA and both he and Dr Roland Silva of ICOMOS and the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka were sponsored by CAA.

Description Collaboration with UIA on the UIA Practice Accord setting standards in architectural practice globally. 18 of CAA members are not members of UIA so CAA’s participation brings wider representation. Attended by CAA President, George Henderson (UK) and Chairman of Practice, Phillip Kungu (Kenya) who inserted reference to sustainability issues and the Habitat Agenda in the document.

Description CAA sourced and sponsored a UK engineer (Chris McCarthy of Battle McCarthy, working on commissions in Malaysia (including the Commonwealth University project) to speak on aspects of environmental sustainability in construction.

Title Exhibition of Historic Buildings
Description Exhibition of Historic Buildings, Wellington. Country delegates to the CAA General Assembly were asked to bring with them a small display illustrating built heritage in their countries to form an exhibition in the foyers of the Assembly venue to stimulate discussions on the issues of conservation across countries. Six countries responded to the call and the exhibition was formed.

Title Housing for the Poor Conference
Description International Union of Architects/CAA/Indian Institute of Architects Conference ‘Housing for the Poor’, Mumbai. The sub-themes of this forum; planning and designing; innovative technology, implementation and finance; were addressed by local and overseas speakers from the Philippines, Canada, Hong Kong, South Africa and Australia. CAA sourced Heather Dodd from South Africa who discussed issues surrounding housing delivery in that country and the lack of quality in the environments generated so far. The conference declaration called for the involvement of built environment professions both in policy formulation and the initiation and implementation of projects. Noting that decades of deliberation have had no impact it also called for a change in ‘the mindset of the political, administrative, entrepreneurial, and professional leadership …… to meet the challenge of humane housing for the poor…’. Both the UIA President Vassilis Sgoutas and CAA President Phillip Kungu attended and agreed that this first collaboration in activities between the two organisations must continue.

Title Migration and Urbanisation' Seminar
Description This seminar hosted by the Ghana Institute of Architects had the theme ‘Migration and Urbanisation, effects on the planned city and its environment’ with the intention that it provide a timely forum to discuss the future of Accra, which currently faces these issues as it enters the 21st century. CAA funded Rodney Harber from Durban, South Africa to speak.

Description With the theme ‘Affordable housing for all’ this conference hosted by Rizvi College attracted 15 overseas speakers. CAA resource person, Professor Harber from Durban South Africa spoke on his work in the informal settlements of Durban.
