Housing for the Poor Conference |
| Description |
International Union of Architects/CAA/Indian Institute of Architects Conference ‘Housing for the Poor’, Mumbai. The sub-themes of this forum; planning and designing; innovative technology, implementation and finance; were addressed by local and overseas speakers from the Philippines, Canada, Hong Kong, South Africa and Australia. CAA sourced Heather Dodd from South Africa who discussed issues surrounding housing delivery in that country and the lack of quality in the environments generated so far. The conference declaration called for the involvement of built environment professions both in policy formulation and the initiation and implementation of projects. Noting that decades of deliberation have had no impact it also called for a change in ‘the mindset of the political, administrative, entrepreneurial, and professional leadership …… to meet the challenge of humane housing for the poor…’. Both the UIA President Vassilis Sgoutas and CAA President Phillip Kungu attended and agreed that this first collaboration in activities between the two organisations must continue. |
