Description CAA region meeting Kuala Lumpur. This meeting was hosted by ARCASIA (Architects Council of Asia) whose meeting also marked the 80th anniversary of the founding of Pertuban Arkitek Malaysia (Malaysian Institute of Architects). CAA sponsored Sir Micheal Hopkins as keynote speaker and Senior Vice President Prof Gordon Holden represented CAA and addressed the Council meeting.

Description CAA Africa South sub region meeting, Bloemfontein. The South African institute of Architects Annual Convention provided a focus for this meeting. Funding was applied to ensure a more inclusive meeting by assisting with the travel expenses of delegates who also participated in the proceedings of the Convention which focused on housing and architecture.

Description This unique annual event brings together the region’s significant designers to review each other’s work. CAA sponsored the keynote speaker Chris Abel from UK (although currently living in Malta), a writer on Malaysian architecture and architects who spoke on the inclusion of ecological values and regional culture in architecture. Sponsorship also allowed promotion of CAA’s ‘Cities and Sustainability’ programme.

Title Vision Re Vision' Conference New Zealand
Description This conference, which followed the CAA General Assembly, looked at new ways in which the profession is working, and can work, in the future. The main sessions featured invited speakers, local, regional and international (Australia, France, Holland, Malaysia, UK, and USA). CAA sponsored Dr Ken Yeang from Malaysia. In an unusual session two speakers engaged with a controversial local issue, the redevelopment of Wellington’s derelict docklands, raising media interest (Will Bruder from the USA gave a TV interview) with calls for action. Parallel sessions with the theme Sustainable Architecture, Sustainable Practice were made up of submitted and refereed papers.

Title Practice support to island members
Description CAA vice-president Oceania Russell Hawken based in New Zealand is developing a framework whereby these small communities of architects can participate in the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes of the larger institutes on a regular basis. This year delegates attended the RAIA Convention in Cairns and a workshop on contracts has been held in Fiji.
