Award Citation
The Robert Matthew Award 2003 is made to Balkrishna Doshi
of Ahmedabad, India, for his outstanding body of innovative
and regionally sensitive work spanning a long career from
1950 to the present day.
Apprenticed to Le Corbusier in Paris; senior designer and
representative for Le Corbusier at Chandigaru and Ahmedabad;
and an associate of Louis I. Kahn in India, - Doshi has carried
out a remarkable range of work, including public and institutional
buildings in Ahmedabad; housing projects in Gujarat Mumbai
and Indore; master planning in Jaipur and seminal buildings
such as Sangrath at Ahmedabad.
He is a founding member, Director and trustee of the Vastu
– Shilpa Foundation which provides a link between academics
and practice by evolving norms, standards and references for
contextual design, with its tri-fold activities of research,
research application and dissemination.
He has an active and distinguished record in teaching, both
in Ahmedabad as Professor, Director and Dean of the school
of Architecture and Planning, and as visiting professor and
critic to Universities in the United States and Europe.
From the early years at the heart of international modernist
thinking, Doshi’s intellectual growth has been such
that he has moved towards a “mystical” understanding
of the many influences that have shaped the rich vernacular
of India to create a new architecture rooted in the past,
which is contemporary. His is an outstanding contribution
to the development of architecture in the region.
Special Commendation
A special commendation is made to Terry Farrell and Partners
for the major contribution they have made, particularly within
the contemporary language of architecture in the United Kingdom,
but also abroad.
Terry Farrell’s great ability and vision in terms of
master planning; urban design and regeneration; conceptual
developmental; and in the delivery of outstanding projects
of great skill and detail design, have marked him out as a
significant presence in British architecture.
