The Council of the Commonwealth Association of Architects attended the UIA Congress in Durban this year. Mandated by a long established policy to ‘collaborate and not duplicate’ with the global body for architects CAA held its 72nd Council Meeting on Sunday 03 August and a lunchtime reception for members on Tuesday 5 August 2014.
Held triennially, the congress this year took place at Durban’s International Convention Centre (ICC) from 03-07 August 2014, when approximately 6000 delegates from around the world met in Durban. This was the first time that the event is being held in Southern Africa.
The theme of architecture OTHERWHERE explored how architects can play a pivotal role in addressing social inequalities. This year’s event also explored concepts of sustainability to OTHER global initiatives and refers to COP 17 (Built Environment Charter) and RIO+20 (Soil Programme) focusing on urbanisation and agricultural opportunities in and on the peripheries of cities.
The International Student Competition provides a significant platform for both undergraduate and graduate students from schools of architecture around the world to be part of the congress.
