This time ARCASIA received 410 entries under 10 different categories for Aracsais Awards for Architecture (AAA) 2018. Bangladeshi Architects performed outstandingly by winning a Gold Medal and two Commendations Awards. The Grand Award Ceremony was held on 12 September, 2018 at Tokyo, Japan.
- Architect Jalal Ahmed received Gold Medal in Social Responsible Architecture for his project Disappearing Lands: Supporting Communities Affected by River Erosion at Gaibandha.
A large part of Bangladesh is a delta in formation with a large number of major river systems. These rivers, before reaching the Bay of Bengal, frequently change their course, thus eroding the riverbanks. According to a statistic nearly seven million people are displaced due to river erosions during the last two decades, and millions pf people are directly or indirectly affected every year.
The project region is located in the north-western Bangladesh, a highly disaster-prone district with ongoing riverbank erosion that lead to permanent loss of agricultural lands as well as homesteads. This project was formally launched in April 2004 by Practical Action, Bangladesh to help the communities, which are affected by flood and river erosion in this area. Two major components of the project were to develop cluster villages and some multipurpose shelters for the vulnerable communities in the region.
The project also focused on food security and alternative employments generation for the erosion affected displaced resource poor communities through different innovative strategies based on disaster risk management and vulnerability reduction, adaptation to climate change issues and building awareness about social, civil and political rights.
- Architect Ehsan Khan was awarded for Bangladesh Mohila Samity Complex (Bangladesh Women Association Complex), Dhaka in Public Amenity Buildings Institutional Category.
Mohila Samity is located at Baily Road; a road known for its public amassing due to its vibrant cultural significance. The original building hosted an auditorium; which became so popular among the theatre groups of Dhaka that Baily road has come to be known as Natak Sharani (Theatre Avenue). The roots of the theatre movement of modern Bengal can be traced back to Mohila Samity. The institution had turned into a hub for theatre activists and enthusiasts. Over time the activity of Mohila Samity expanded but the existing premise lost its appeal as it could not meet the present demands, the theatre groups started moving out to other venues with better facilities and the overall environment deteriorated. The Mohila Samity planned the redevelopment of the premise with the vision to accommodate present and future needs which includes theatres (one with 250 seats and the other one with 100 seats), conference facilities, offices & training facilities for the institution, a primary school, etc. Salient Feature: Entry Chottor, Decks at different lavels , Bridges & ramps connecting spaces, Brick walled Theater, the Breeze Soleil.
- Architect Asif Mohammed Ahsanul Haq of Venna Architects was awarded for RIZIA POROMPORA, 256, Stadium Road, Cox’sBazar, in Residential Projects, Multiple Family Residential Category. Venna Architects is associated by Architect Arifa Akhter and Architect Asif.
‘RIZIA POROMPORA’ is an attempt to recreate an old house and memories of a traditional extended family for eleven siblings; when physiological sufferings and helpless aggression of modern development & rapid urbanization over powering their old home, when high-rise buildings and shopping complexes slowly took over their skies brought forth the idea to recreate their old memories on their mother’s land.
Recall their memories and to recreate their humble and modest house with bamboo hedge and thatch roof in to a contemporary apartment typology at the same time was the main challenge.
That wide spread open front yard of old home, their favourite old benches at verandah (Poshchati Verandah) where they used to pass hours chatting, open front court yard right by the Mango, Coconut, and Betel nut trees, flower garden, water-well and showering place, their place to dine together, all these has been taken into considerations; but this time in a different way as it will be in a multi storied building and comparatively in a smaller land.
Uplift & scattered distribution of social spaces throughout the circulation like court yard, Poshchati Verandas at different levels, evening terrace with water court, large indoor space as community hall with the semi outdoor space and an infinity terrace all together give life to an apartment house.
Here, the majestic power of social space used as a tool of interaction. These interactions occur here between siblings; with the next generation and next in a traditional extend family; with neighbour who passes through or living beside and so on. These social spaces create a sense of belongingness among the dwellers and ensure them more safety and security.
